Rafal Gorzycki - Syriusz

2017 Rafal Gorzycki & Requiem Records

The latest solo album from Gorzycki consists of a huge dose of contemplation, peace, mystery, economical form and the depthness of sound ... A true Gesamtkunstwerk. On this record Rafal Gorzycki plays not only his leading instrument - drums, but most of all, on the piano, vibraphone, electronics and organs. However SYRIUSZ is not just a musicial experiance. A poetry of contemporary Polish poet and painter Krzysztofa Gruse, who is living in Germany, is also featured on the album.

Najnowszy, solowy album Gorzyckiego to olbrzymia dawka, kontemplacji, spokoju, tajemnicy, oszczednej formy i glebi brzmienia... Prawdziwa synteza sztuk. Artysta bedzie tez prezentowac poezje wspólczesna mieszkajacego w Niemczech poety i malarza – Krzysztofa Grusego.

This solo project has been maturing in my head for almost 20 years, since I heard the album "Pictures" by Jack De Johnette'a. Now I'm ready - I have developed my own language as a drummer and a composer. I have always envied writers and painters, because they can create a work only by themselves - from the beginning to the end. There is no executive apparatus in the form of other band members. It's just you. Nothing in between. The solo project is a first stage for me, when it is completed, I will I return to the larger forms. It is the most personal album of my career ... Thanks to the piano I can better express emotions, which as a drummer and composer I could not reveal before ... The piano is the power of sound, color and mood that will emanate from Sirius ... I want to take this project and go with it beyond the music. I'm interested in the film and visual arts. I recently visited a gallery at CCA Ujazdowski Castle, where I was impressed by the exhibition "Things do Things" - a lot of dolls, puppets, animated films. I really liked it a lot. After that I decided to turn my solo album into a spectacle with color, light, and motion video. I feel that this will be an interesting take, and furthermore I will not have to wrangle with colleagues from the band (laughs), so I can devote all my energy to the combination of music, word and image ... Interesuje mnie takze film i sztuki plastyczne. Odwiedzilem ostatnio CSW Zamek Ujazdowski, gdzie zachwycilem sie wystawa „Rzeczy robia rzeczy" - mnóstwo lalek, pacynek, filmów animowanych. Bardzo mi sie to wszystko spodobalo. Zdecydowalem sie zrobic z mojego solowego albumu spektakl – wlaczyc kolor, swiatlo, film i ruch. (Rafal Gorzycki)

Essential Polish Jazz Recodings

One of the things I like about Jazz, is I don't know what's going to happen next. Do you?
(Bix Beiderbecke)

Astigmatic by
Krzysztof Komeda Quintet

'Astigmatic' represents a fresh approach and a different way of hearing and playing jazz.
(Stuart Nicholson, Leeds College of Music)

Music for K by
Tomasz Stanko Quintet

Aggressive, technically almost impossible to believe, and full of drama and dynamics. 'Music for K' may be Stanko's classic.

Bossa Nova by
Novi Singers

The human voice is a perfect jazz instrument and the possibilities in sound, expression and interpretation are unlimited.
(Ewa Wanat, Novi Singers)

Habanera by
Simple Acoustic Trio

A strong, albeit more direct album that is clearly suggestive of things to come.
